Monte Mai
Avantgarde Pop
Founded in 2020 by singer Anais Schmidt (Grenada), singer and guitar wizard Fabio Pinto and bassist Fabio Besomi. This unique encounter between Swiss precision and Caribbean freschezza finds its echo in the music of Monte Mai from Lugano. A skilful mix of extended melodies, angelic voices and pounding electronic beats is presented in pure harmony.
The debut album, “Eye Sea Double,” features eleven tracks that reveal a constant shift in direction, a journey without a map. The destination is always the same: collective consciousness.
Deconstructed rhythms, smoky bass riffs, lanky, psychedelic nursery rhyme-like vocal lines, analogue synths and angelic voices are layered and orchestrated in a retro-manic journey that lands in post-genre side-pop and mock electronica.
The second album, "Tropicalpino," by the Swiss-Caribbean trio Monte Mai, is distinguished by its mature and sophisticated songwriting. It's a timeless work brimming with pop energy and personality, transporting us to a place of transition—a meeting point we've always longed for. "Tropicalpino" is a fusion, a crasis, that connects two seemingly disparate worlds: the tropics and the Alps, opening new avenues of exploration and connection. By blending Mediterranean melodic traditions with krautrock-inspired rhythmic impulses, they create an exotic, organic, and authentic pop sound that evolves into something both fresh and classic. "Japanese Girl" is a modern interpretation of 80s flair and hits the mark perfectly. „Se un Guru“ grabs you immediately with its playful, vibrant energy – like colorful Play-Doh in a child’s hands – while „Ciondolare“ takes you on a kaleidoscopic journey, condensed into a single song that captures the breathtaking wonder of first seeing the sea. “Plastic Rainbows“ is one of those tracks that gets under your skin, while „Universe Can Dance“ covers folk-pop with cinematic arrangements and immersive atmospheres. „Peckham Rye“ is a remarkable track, a sound that feels like the offspring of Suicide and Stereolab.
